Sikh Gurus

The

Guru's

The foundation of Sikhism was laid down by Guru Nanak. Guru Nanak infused his own consciousness into a disciple, who then became Guru, subsequently passing the light on to the next, and so on. The word "Guru" is derived from the root words "Gu", which means darkness or ignorance, and "Ru", which means light or knowledge. The Guru is the experience of Truth (God). The era of the ten gurus of Sikhism spans nearly 300 years, from the birth of Nanak Dev in 1469, through the life of Guru Gobind Singh. At the time of his death in 1708, Guru Gobind Singh bequeathed his title of Guru to the Sikh scripture, 'Guru Granth Sahib' which is regarded as the embodiment of one guiding light which passed from each guru to their successors. Each one of the ten Gurus represents a divine attribute
